Judge John O'Gara and Judge Heinz Rudolf discussed two programs they have presented to high school students and parents, Seven Reasons to Leave a Party and The Worries of the Worldwide Web. They also speak to students about bullying and the impact of negative words.

October Meeting: Chester Eagles
2016 Evansville Citizen of the Year was Mrs. Teletha Pautler. Teletha has been a long time member and supporter of RCRTA. Congratulations, Teletha!
On August 26, the Randolph County Commissioners signed a proclamation declaring September 1 as Retired Teachers Day in Randolph County. This proclamation is in recognition of our volunteer service in the county. We have logged over 12,000 volunteer hours during the past year.

OCTOBER HIGHLIGHTS:
IRTA CONVENTION--October 26 and 27, Springfield
Emily Lyons was our Unit Honoree convention banquet on October 26. Emily Lyons has been the Chester Area Vice-President of Randolph County RTA since 2002 and Community Participation Chair since 2000. Emily taught for 35 years. She is also active in local and state activities promoting our area.
Our unit donated a basket for the silent auction. President Luana Flynn attended the convention with Emily.

State Representative, Jerry Costello II, was our guest speaker. Jane Peiffer was welcomed as a new member by our membership chair, Emilie Roehrkasse. Diane Gross, also joined but was unable to attend the meeting. IRTA Area 6 Representative, Bill Funkhouser, visited and updated our group.

August Meeting--Ruma Convent
The August meeting was held at the Ruma Convent. Senator Dave Luechtefeld was our guest speaker. We welcomed two new members, Mary Ringering and Patti Miles. Members, Mary Ringering and Emilie Roehrkasse enjoyed checking out our attendance prizes.

JUNE MEETING: HOOK, LINE & SINKER, STEELEVILLE
Rhonda Black and Gary Ebers became new members of our unit. Ed Gray, IRTA Region 15 Director, visited with us. Our guest speaker was Dr. Don Baden. He told us about the Storybook Project, a program that connects prisoners with their children through storybooks. Our unit donated several books to the project. The June meeting was held in Steeleville at Hook, Line, & Sinker.

Norris Lessley spoke to our unit about teaching theology classes in Romania. Donna Campbell shared information about the upcoming Tour de Tilden bike ride to raise scholarship funds. The group enjoyed the lunch at the World Shooting Complex.

State Representative Jerry Costello II, was our guest speaker at the October meeting in Chester. Paul Strid, IRTA member benefits representative, also spoke to members about the Medicare Advantage program. Welcome to Darlene Shannon who joined our group.

Senator Dave Luechtefeld was guest speaker at our August meeting at the Ruma Convent. Larry Newman, AMBA Representative, also shared information about IRTA member benefits. We also welcomed two new members, Mary Anne Shaw and Sharon Beckley.

Neva Liefer was our unit honoree at the IRTA Convention in Springfield. Neva was recognized at the Convention Banquet on Monday, October 21. She received a blanket from IRTA. Joining her for the event was her husband, Omer.

Neva has been a member of IRTA and the Randolph County RTA for 20 years. During that time she served as secretary for 8 years and has been the Health & Welfare Committee Chair for the past 4 years. She also served on the nominating committee for one year and was Vice-President from Red Bud for one year.
Since retirement Neva volunteers about 300 hours each year in her community. She reads to primary classes at St. John's Lutheran School in Red Bud and is active with the Stephen Ministry program, taking additional training once an month and visiting a shut-in once a week.

At the Randolph County Commissioners’ Meeting on Friday, August 31st, 2012, the Commissioners proclaimed September 1st as Retired Teachers Day to recognize the many volunteer hours our members contribute to the community.

Sparta Native, Vic Hamer, was guest speaker at our April meeting. Mr. Hamer is working to bring clean water wells to remote areas of Kenya. Our association collected donations at the meeting to help with his efforts. Contact Vic Hamer at [email protected] for additional information.
